Grandfather Mountain Growth Chart Platform
As a premiere tourist attraction of The High Country, Grandfather Mountain is the highest peak on the eastern escarpment of the Blue Ridge Mountains. As the latest addition to the mountain top gift shop came to completion, the owners discovered the finished floor level on the top floor was 16" shy of being exactly a mile above sea level. Coffey Architecture was commissioned by the Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation to provide the mountain top gift shop with a platform that allowed visitors to stand one mile above sea level. The platform incorporates graphics relating to the history of Grandfather Mountain and its surrounding environment and features a growth chart for visitors to track their height above the one mile level.
